A Celtic Pottery Newlyn Phoenix Pattern Dish

A mid-20th-century studio pottery dish produced by Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, Cornwall, featuring the Phoenix pattern. The circular earthenware vessel is decorated with a hand-painted central stylised bird motif in a dark green-black glaze against a white ground. This central well is surrounded by a broad border of mottled blue and ochre sponged decoration, further embellished with dark foliate scrolls and abstract motifs. The reverse is finished in a white tin-glaze and features five hand-painted dark green spirals, a characteristic feature of this studio. The reverse also retains a heavily damaged rectangular paper label to the centre and a small circular white sticker with a handwritten character. The dish features a slightly upturned rim and a recessed foot rim.
