Description

A late Victorian nursing rocking chair in the Eastlake style, dating from circa 1880 to 1900. The frame is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, likely walnut or stained beech. The design features a shaped and pierced crest rail positioned above a gallery of six turned spindles. The back and seat are padded and upholstered in a russet-coloured crushed velvet or moquette fabric, which is secured with a border of metal upholstery tacks. The reverse of the back panel is also upholstered. The chair is designed with swept-back open arms and turned front legs, supported by a series of turned stretchers including one front, two side, and one rear stretcher. The entire frame is mounted on traditional solid wood rockers. The underside reveals replacement jute webbing in a basket-weave pattern.
