Description

This vintage tool is a carpenter’s broad side axe, also known as a hewing hatchet, designed for squaring timber and flat surfacing work. The forged steel head features a broad, curved cutting bit and a flat poll. The side of the poll is stamped with the literal transcription SOLID STEEL HEAD. This designation was common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to indicate a head manufactured from a single piece of steel rather than an iron body with a steel bit welded on. The head is fitted to a carved wooden handle featuring a distinctive offset curve, an ergonomic design choice intended to provide knuckle clearance for the user when hewing flat surfaces. The handle terminates in a shaped knob with a pre-drilled hole, currently containing a length of pink synthetic twine.
