Description

A George III mahogany longcase clock by Arthur Shaw of Billingborough. The arched brass dial features a chapter ring with Roman numeral hour markers and Arabic minute markers, enclosing a finely engraved centre with scrolling foliate motifs, a subsidiary seconds dial, and a date aperture. The dial is signed Arthur Shaw Billingboro along the lower edge of the chapter ring. It is fitted with ornate pierced black steel hands. The 8-day mechanical twin-train movement is weight-driven and strikes on a bell, featuring two winding holes. The mahogany case includes an arched hood with brass-capped fluted columns and a trunk with a long, shaped arched door, showing cross-banding and fine stringing details typical of the period.
