An antique mechanical office security device, identified as The Protectograph Cheque Writer, manufactured by Halsby and Co., Ltd., of 6 St. Bride Street, London. This device was produced under licence from the original American designs by G.W. Todd and Company. The unit features a heavy, rounded body finished in black enamel with elegant gold-tone pinstripe detailing. It is equipped with a side-mounted crank handle featuring a black knob, a sliding carriage with a flat metal plate for cheque placement, and two integrated numerical scales. A metal nameplate is affixed to the end, displaying the manufacturer’s details and the stamped serial number 396533. These machines were designed to prevent the fraudulent alteration of cheques by embossing or perforating the monetary value into the paper fibre.
