Description

A small hand-carved heraldic wall plaque of shield form, associated with Rivington and Blackrod Grammar School. The piece is constructed from a stained hardwood, likely oak, featuring a central Latin cross carved in high relief. To the base is a small painted banner bearing the Latin inscription AD LUCIEM (To the Light) in black lettering over a gold-toned ground. The wood is finished with a smooth satin lustre. Such plaques were commonly produced as school crests or for commemorative purposes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Height: approx. 120mm, Width: approx. 100mm.
