Description

A late 19th-century French majolica earthenware plate produced by H. Boulenger & Cie at the Choisy-le-Roi pottery. The circular form features relief-moulded decoration in the impasto style, depicting two male figures in a sparring or boxing stance amongst foliage. The figure to the left is framed within a rectangular scroll-like cartouche. The rim is decorated with raised, stylised characters in the Japonisme taste. The plate is finished with a vibrant chartreuse green crackle glaze to the front and a contrasting turquoise crackle glaze to the reverse. The underside bears a black printed factory mark comprising an ampersand, a central HB monogram, and the letters Cie, above the script for choisy le Roi.
