Description

A monocular compound microscope by R and J Beck Ltd, London, identified as Model 29 and dating to circa 1930. The instrument is constructed with a heavy cast-metal horseshoe base and a curved limb finished in black lacquer, featuring brass objective housings and a chrome-finished draw-tube. It is equipped with a monocular body tube, a triple revolving nosepiece currently fitted with two objectives, a rack-and-pinion coarse focus mechanism, and a fine focus adjustment knob. The rectangular fixed stage includes mounting points for slide clips. Light redirection is provided by a plano-concave mirror on a swinging arm beneath the stage. The limb is engraved with the marks London, Model 29, the R and J Beck Ltd London logo, Patent No 336063, and serial number 10423. The microscope is accompanied by its original fitted mahogany carrying case with a brass handle and latch. The interior door of the case features a handwritten paper reference table titled Approximate Magnifying Powers of Microscope, detailing magnification levels for 32mm, 16mm, and 4mm objectives. Two additional eyepieces are stored within the case door.
