Description

A mid-to-late 20th-century Dutch Zaanse-style wall clock, designed as a reproduction of a traditional 17th-century timepiece. The stained wood case features glass side panels and is decorated with brass mounts, including twisted pillars flanking the dial. The top is surmounted by a brass crest inscribed with the traditional Dutch motto NU ELCK SYN SIN, flanked by figures and a central shield, and topped with a finial depicting Atlas supporting a blue celestial sphere. The dial comprises a white chapter ring with black Roman numeral hour markers and an outer track of Arabic numerals for minutes. The centre of the dial is decorated with chased floral and scroll patterns and features pierced brass hands. The base of the dial is marked made in holland. The mechanical, weight-driven striking movement is accessed through a cutout in the backplate. The rear brass plate of the movement is stamped with three gear-shaped symbols containing the letters S, B, and S, followed by FEINTECHNIK within a rectangular border and the model number 661, identifying it as a product of SBS Feintechnik, Germany. The reverse of the wooden case bears a blue and white paper label for Carrs Jewellers, Blackburn.
