Description

A hand-coloured aquatint maritime print after William John Huggins (1781–1845), depicting a hybrid steam and sailing vessel at sea. The central vessel, identified by the title as one of the steamships prepared for the Greek War of Independence (likely the Karteria), is shown under full sail with thick smoke rising from its single funnel. It flies a Greek revolutionary flag and is surrounded by smaller local craft against a coastal backdrop. The print is an intaglio production showing a distinct rectangular plate mark surrounding the image. The lower margin bears the publication inscription: London, Published by W.J. Huggins, 105, Leadenhall Street, Nov.r 1826. Centred below this is the number 25 and the full title: A REPRESENTATION OF THE STEAM BOATS, PREPARED FOR THE GREEKS. The work is presented in a simple black wooden frame.
