Inlaid Wood Musical Jewellery Box with Floral Marquetry

A mid-to-late 20th-century wooden musical jewellery box of rectangular form. The hinged lid is decorated with a central marquetry panel depicting a floral spray of roses and lilies, rendered in various natural and dyed wood veneers. This central panel is set within a field of highly figured wood, likely walnut or rosewood, and framed by light wood stringing. The sides of the box feature a matching horizontal band of figured veneer accented with light-coloured inlay. The interior is fully lined with red velvet and is divided into several sections: a large open well, a fixed raised panel likely housing a musical movement, and two rows of ring rolls. A rectangular mirror is inset into the underside of the lid and secured with brass hinges. While no maker’s marks or labels are present, the craftsmanship and design are consistent with the marquetry traditions of the Sorrento region of Italy.
