A 20th Century Japanese Style Miniature Black Lacquer Jewellery Chest

This miniature jewellery chest is constructed from lacquered wood or composite material with a black finish. The lid is decorated with a traditional Autumn Grasses or Akigusa motif, featuring chrysanthemums and pampas grass rendered in orange, green, and silver-toned pigments. The decoration appears to be transfer-applied or hand-painted. The chest features a tansu-style design with two small drawers at the base, each fitted with white composite or plastic handles. This item is characteristic of mid-to-late 20th-century Japanese export or souvenir lacquerware and is similar in style to pieces produced by Otagiri, though no maker marks are visible.
