A 20th-century decorative figurine of a Japanese sumo wrestler

A decorative figurine depicting a Japanese sumo wrestler in a ritualistic crouching pose. The figure is cast in a pale, greenish-white composite material with a matte finish, designed to simulate stone or jade. The wrestler wears a ceremonial apron, known as a kesho-mawashi, which features relief-moulded decoration of a pine tree and a celestial body. This apron is finished with a bronze-toned gilt effect. The figure is mounted on an integral, stepped, and contoured black base. No maker’s marks, signatures, or factory stamps are visible on the figure or the base.
