Description

A pair of carved wood sculptures depicting bears in active walking poses with open mouths. The figures are executed in the Black Forest style, characterised by deep, rhythmic chisel marks across the bodies to simulate the texture of fur. The sculptures are fashioned from wood finished with a dark brown stain. No signatures, maker’s marks, or inscriptions are present on the undersides or bodies of the pieces. The carving technique and form are consistent with early to mid-20th century decorative woodwork.

100mm x 150mm x 60mm each.

Condition report:

One figure exhibits significant shrinkage cracks, or checking, extending across the back and down the flank. The second figure shows more minor surface wear and small abrasions. Both items display an accumulation of dust in the recessed carving and some lightening of the stain at the paws and high points, consistent with age and handling.
